Dental Crowns & Bridges Belmont

Dental crowns are special tooth shaped caps that are placed over a tooth to restore its original shape, strength and size.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are special tooth shaped caps that are placed over a tooth to restore its original shape, strength and size. A crown is a dental device that’s used to bring teeth new strength even when they have been heavily damaged and is usually cemented in place and completely surrounds the visible area of the tooth which is located above the gum line. This gives a patient the perfect surface that they can chew on and enjoy the comfort of a full tooth when severe damage has taken place.

Usually crowns are installed to protect a week tooth from any type of decay or to hold a tooth together that has begun to experience major cracks or decay. When a tooth gets severely worn down some type of structure needs to be put into place to make sure that the tooth can sustain future chewing and wear. Crowns are put into place to provide support for teeth and to provide us with a chewing surface that we need to properly digest our food and to comfortably chew and speak.

Crowns can also be used to hold dental bridges in place for dentures, support teeth with large fillings, to space teeth for cosmetic modification and more. They are extremely beneficial in providing us with the support that we need to have a structure over fragile teeth, as well as for creating spaces and modifications within teeth for the use of dentures or other appliances.

Types of dental crowns

Dental crowns come in a variety of different materials including different metals, porcelain fused metals, stainless steel, resin, ceramic, all porcelain and are made in a local dental lab in Belmont, Geelong. Each of these materials have their own distinct advantages and uses. Stainless steel crowns are more often used with children as they are cost effective and perfect for both primary and permanent teeth. Metal crowns are built for longevity and offer some of the best coverage in terms of wear on a crown. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are designed to match the color of your teeth minimizing the look of a crown. All resin and all ceramic can do the same but don’t feature the same resilience to wear.

Dental crowns can also come in permanent and temporary style constructions. A temporary crown is usually something that’s created with in a dentist’s office as a quick solution. Permanent crowns are made in dental laboratories and placed in to last you as long as possible.
